Darth Vader at TLA!
Thanks for visiting us at the TLA to have your photo taken with Darth
Vader and his Stormtroopers! All of the photos were fun and we hope your
students and family love seeing you with these great Star Wars characters.

Special thanks to Sam Morton, Alan Steinberg, and Chris Smith of the 501st Legion of Star Wars costume enthusiasts! You guys looked great and we
appreciate your donation to our efforts to promote graphic novels &
comic books in Texas libraries!

Grand Prize Winner!
Carol Elliott of Anderson Elementary and Giela Petty of Costin
Elementary - both schools are in Lufkin, TX - split the Grand Prize of $1500 for dressing up like Princess Leia and Luke Skywalker. Also pictured awarding the winning check along with the Star Wars characters are Doylene Escue of Escue & Associates (one of our great Texas representatives!), Paul Abdo,
Editor-in-Chief, and Jim Abdo, Publisher.

Here's the photo that won it all!

Best Action Shot
Many librarians battled the Sith Lord with great photo results - but this shot was one of the best.

Best Darth Vader Hug
Many librarians wanted to hug Vader, one of the worst villains in movie history. Maybe he could have turned away from the Dark Side if he had a Texas librarian in his life when he was a boy on Tattooine!

Best Reading Practice
This librarian was the only one to see if Vader and the Storm Troopers were fluent readers.

Best Shared Reading
This photo was the first time a librarian decided to try to read to the Star Wars guests. This inspired many photos like this one later on.

Best Actress
This librarian did a great job pleading for more budget money from Darth Vader.

Best Custom T-Shirt
This librarian challenged Darth Vader with her mask and her t-shirt claiming she was the true Sith and that all in her command must read!

Best Special Effects
This librarian had Vader put the lightsaber between her side and her arm, an old kids' trick to make it look like you've been stabbed - and an excellent special effect!

Best Book Bash
Darth Vader deserved to be rapped on the helmet for the way he's behaved in the library and the galaxy.

Best Use of Our Guaranteed Binding
All Spotlight books are printed and bound by ABDO, and guaranteed for life, even if cut in two by a light saber.

Best Pose
This librarian employs an ancient Samurai-like pose to battle Lord Vader.
Nice!

Best Beheading
We think this librarian's students are going to love this and how gross it's going to be. She chose one of our new books from the That's Gross! Series to highlight her point. Way to use your head!

Best Use of Technology
When your name is Dr. Hurt, you already sound like a hero. Dr. Hurt brought along a digital video recorder and made a great video of his encounter with Darth Vader. We hope to post it here soon.

Best Choking by the Use of the Force
One librarian knew Vader had the power to choke people without touching them, just like the famous scenes in Episode IV. This was one of the better photos with this theme.

Best Battle While Still Promoting Books
This crew of librarians - an Honorable Mention in last year's Spider-Man photo contest - was able to make it seem like there was an epic battle going on, but that you should still check out these great books.

Best Costumes
Our grand prize winners had great costumes but so did these two good vs.
evil sci-fi outfits! These librarians were also winners in last year's contest.

Patricia Stockland and Rochelle Baltzer Interview
We recently interviewed Patricia Stockland and Rochelle Baltzer, editors for our new series Essential Health: Strong, Beautiful Girls. The series was highlighted in School Library Journal's November 2008 Series Made Simple supplement, which called the "personal stories" in the books "forthright and candid" and that "the true-to-life situations described in these books will be a sure hook for the intended audience."
